Tom Wolfe did a profile of Spector in 1964 when Wolfe worked for the Herald Trib. It's in Kandy-Kolored Tangerine Flake Streamline Baby, his collection of newspaper and magazine pieces published in 1964. Piece makes clear that Spector was completely bat**** insane even then, although without citing obvious malevolence.
