This is what I've never understood. High strikeout totals don't matter for a hitter, yet a high strikeout rate is important for a pitcher.

Not that obvious. He used to be known as a good-hitting pitcher and did hit some homers back then -- so it ain't out of the question that he could have hit two in a game, at least not enough that you could assume that most readers would know it.
