With the Internet, many reporters and many people can find things by themselves.

I think the difference is that a professional librarian can often do this task much faster and would be aware of changes to research sources.

Yes on both. There are just so many resources, both free and fee-based, that a reporter can't possibly take the time to learn with all his/her other responsibilities.

Since my original post, I've been directed to someone else making similar points all the way back in 1995...
