From my former paper in Florence, Ala., home of Division II North Alabama, a perennial top 10 football team.....

"Frazier is the 22nd player from a Division I program to transfer to UNA since Bowden became coach in January."

I knew Terry Bowden had brought a boat load of transfers to the team, including a bunch from Florida State, obviously, but 22? That's incredible.

Has anyone ever heard of or covered a team with so many D1 transfers in such a short period of time?

Two years ago when California (Pa.) made their run to the national semifinals, they had 17 on the roster, but I'm pretty sure they didn't all come in during the same year.

Check out all of the fully-funded DII powerhouses, I'm sure they have a bunch. I can think of Abilene Christian, Delta State, Grand Valley State, Ashland (Ohio) off the top of my head that usually have a lot.

Just a thought.

Not a surprise - I'm sure Bowden put the word out to coaches that he's got an open door if any of their players are getting run off.

Definitely not a surprise he's getting a bunch of transfers. But 22? That's a TON.

Talked to him a couple of weeks ago... has two starters back on offense, so he needed to make a quick fix -- even for him..

The next question is how many of the 22 had pending legal issues at the time of their departures from the higher levels.

Indiana State brought in almost that many before the 2004 season, the first time ISU's then-skin-flinty administration allowed them to.

They started 4-1 that year ... and are 1-50 since. Buyer beware.

Good point. Apparently, a kid from NC State is starting at QB with a FSU transfer backing him up. Throwing to one of FSU's best receivers from last year.

The list is long and distinguished.....

yeah, and so is my johnson.

Isn't the D-II scholarship limit 36? It will be interesting to see if Bowden keeps this up each year. I never got the impression that the local folks really cared about who was playing as long as the Lions keep winning.

I count 24 former Division I-A players on the Lions' roster. The list is led, as you might imagine, by FSU, which has provided six. Other multiple donors include Troy, West Virginia and North Carolina. The 24 players have seen time at 25 FBS institutions. (QB Harrison Beck began at Nebraska, transferred to N.C. State and is now at North Alabama.)

Who is the backup QB from FSU? The WR is Preston Parker who was the best offensive player on FSU until getting booted off the team.

Can't remember and too lazy to find a link right now. I think I read where he just got to UNA this week or last week.

Actually, I'll link to the main site. I'm not that lazy. :)

Won't the transfers hurt the score that college programs have to remain off probation. What the hell is it called?

DII limit is 36 but you can split value of those 36 scholarships up between as many players as you want. Very few kids at that level get a full ride scholly.

The APR doesn't apply to Division II.

The QB, I assume, is Harrison Beck. Decent guy - not likely to end up on the police blotter - but couldn't find a receive with a compass, a map, both hands a giant target on the wideout's jersey. That and not only is Russell Wilson just a sophomore, but Mike Glennon is also clearly better. Beck needed to go somewhere else to have a chance.

My sources are indicating Lions lost one transfer the other day. guy was booted from navy, but can't play at north alabama because he was kicked out of school, so he must sit out a year.
a couple of the transfers were on campus before bowden came in.
