When he was eight years old, Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey says he was repeatedly abused sexually by a female babysitter. And on one occasion, the abuse was done by a 17-year-old boy. The impact left Dickey feeling angry, alone, afraid of intimacy, unable to trust. He later cheated on his wife, after which he wanted to kill himself because of the guilt and shame.

A friend of mine has coached baseball as the high school level for several years. Players he has coached and coached against are in the big leagues, some with $100m+ contracts. He says Dickey was the best pitcher any of his teams ever went up against.

One of my favorites, and not just because we sound alike. Enjoyed every conversation we had when he was at UT and Team USA. Didn't know he was a literary buff, but it makes sense. He clearly was different from his teammates.
Favorite story, and no idea how true it was. Said he was considering playing football at UT, got there, saw Peyton throwing to Helton, turned around and went straight to the baseball field.
