We’re looking to add part-time contributors to the Hoops Rumors (www.hoopsrumors.com) writing team. We cover NBA player movement with a focus on the financials. This is an excellent opportunity to hone your deadline writing skills and sharpen your judgment of what makes news. It’s also a chance to write about the NBA without leaving your home. The position pays on an hourly basis.

The criteria:

  • Exceptional knowledge of all 30 NBA teams, with no discernible bias.
  • Knowledge of transaction-related concepts and the collective bargaining agreement.
  • At least some college education.
  • Extensive writing experience, with professional writing experience and a background in journalism both strongly preferred.
  • Keen understanding of journalistic principles, ethics and procedures. Completion of basic college-level journalism classes is strongly preferred.
  • Attention to detail. We simply cannot tolerate spelling errors, especially for player and journalist names.
  • Ability to follow the site’s style and tone.
  • Ability to analyze articles and craft intelligent, well-written posts summing up the news in a few paragraphs. We need someone who can balance quick writing with thoughtful analysis. You must be able to add value to breaking news with your own insight, numbers or links to other relevant articles.
  • Ability to use an RSS feed reader. Ability to use Twitter. Both of these are crucial.
  • Weekend availability. You must be available almost every weekend.
  • Weeknight availability. You must be available almost every weeknight, from 5-11pm Central time.
  • Flexibility. You must be available to work on short notice.
If you’re interested, email [email protected], include your résumé, and take a couple of paragraphs to explain why you qualify and stand out. PLEASE note that you saw this posting on SportsJournalists.com. Many will likely apply, so unfortunately we cannot respond to all applications. We're trying to fill our vacancies quickly, so please apply as soon as you can.

This is a part-time position but the writers are expected to be available almost every weekend and almost every weeknight? How many hours a week do these positions entail?

What's the hourly pay rate? And why do I have a feeling it's probably about $7.50?

To answer everyone's questions:

scheyer30: Flexibility is key. Writers don't work every weekend and every weeknight, but we need someone who would be able to cover during shifts that vary week-to-week during those time frames. Currently we have a need for people on Sundays and on Monday nights, but that could change.

HanSenSE: Looks like a yes for that! I placed it in the main jobs forum because the subhead atop the Freelance/stringer help wanted board says, "Post here if you NEED a freelancer or stringer for an event." This would a consistent job with hours each week, and isn't tied to a specific event.

old_tony: The hourly pay rate depends on the candidate, but rest assured it is more than $7.50.

Thanks to the responses we received via SportsJournalists.com, we've filled our openings. We appreciate all of the candidates who applied, and I apologize to the applicants I couldn't respond to personally.
