Steve Phillips rips Carlos Beltran.
Posnanski rips Phillips.

Therefore, Posnanski > Phillips. By a mile.

Interesting read filled with a bunch of Beltran's stats I was unaware of.

Steve Phillips never has anything good to say about anyone or anything connected with the Mets...kind of like BYH.
In fact,. BYH might be Steve Phillips ... or maybe his illegitimate son.

I'll just throw this out there in these here times...

Pedroia: 1.75 million
Youkilis: 6.25 million
Jones: 10 million
----------------
18 million

Beltran
----------------
19.24 millilon

I think Posnanski's argument was on talent, not paycheck.

Interesting numbers, though.

This was funny ...

Yep, those players who don't play the game or make plays, those are the worst kinds of players in the world. You want a player who plays the game, makes plays, a player who makes game plays, the plays gamers play to make, a player who makes plays for plays that playmakers make.

In response to ...

"While he has that great talent, there are times when he doesn't play the game and make plays."

Beltran is as reluctant a superstar as a megamarket has seen.

His biggest problem is that he doesn't seem to even like playing baseball.

That hasn't seemed to stop him from being very good at it.

I think he likes playing baseball. He doesn't like playing in the spotlight, which is not a good thing when you play in New York and make roughly $20 mill a year

His moping joylessness has prevented him from being a truly great player.

He goes about his business with all the zeal of an elementary school custodian, when he should be thanking his lucky luckies that he banked obscene sums of money on the basis of one good postseason (on a team that had a good surrounding cast).

Name one time you've ever seen this guy smile or even really show that he has a pulse. No can do. He's the avatar of the Mets since 2005.

I'm aware of the argument. And, Beltran is a very good player.
But the stance is a little hollow when you could have all three mentioned in retort for less than one Beltran.

Misleading comparison. Two guys who had arbitration years bought out and one 37-year-old superstar who took $10 million in the option year of an undervalued contract and who has since extended for three more years at $14 million each.

The Royals gave Beltran $9 million in his final arbitration year -- 2004. There isn't a center fielder close to Beltran.

Phillips is an idiot.

Or just maybe Carlos is quiet and unemotional on the field.

Pedroia is a third-year player with absolutely no leverage. He takes what the Red Sox give him and says thank you.
Youkilis, who didn't make it to the bigs until he was 25, did not reach free agency when he agreed to a below market value contract with the Red Sox.

In other words... apples and oranges.

Not really.

Problem is, it is easier to play harder when you are getting paid as little as Pedroia is.

I undertand that. I get it. I can't stand Phillips, either.
And, I wasn't comparing apples. I was comparing dollars.
Just as I don't expect Pedroia or Youkilis to make that money in the future, I don't expect Beltran ever to sniff $19 million again.

He'll be 35 when this deal ends, so I think that's probably a reasonable conclusion, but he'll still got another 3-4 year deal that will pay him very well if he wants it. I bet the Yankees regret not going after Carlos when they had the chance to replace Bernie with him.

No doubt. No doubt at all. Beltran's pMLV is awesome. He's a very good player.
In my opinion, he's not worth $19 million.

Is Derek Jeter worth $21.6 million? Was Jason Giambi worth $23 million?
Are any players worth what they got when the market was soaring?
