Pocket (bottle) rockets

Oakland teen loses part of his leg and hand in a fireworks mishap. He had some bottle rockets in his pocket, a burning ember somehow got in there, lit off the bottle rockets and that in turn lit off some M-1000 big boys that did the damage.
Not sure whether to feel sorry for the guy or nominate him for a Darwin award.

1. I agree with the poster below that it probably wasn't a stray burning ember that lit the bottle rocket but a buddy of his pulling a prank.

2. M-1000s that are the equivalent of a half stick of dynamite? Say what?

Ruined his possible career in the Marines and injured a toddler. Fantastic.

A better story, with a bedside video interview. The guy is amazingly coherent for someone who's been through that.
The blown-apart pants laying on the ground are a bit disturbing.

For clarification, while M-1000s pack a powerful explosion, it may not be equivalent to a quarter-stick of dynamite. This comparison is debatable.
