Interesting story in ESPN the Mag on Pat White. It seems like this writer jim macgreggor always writes with a chip on his shoulder about the NFL .

For a long time, there were very few lefty QBs because it was unorthodox, and coaches like being conformists.

Not quite the same comparison, but look how long it took black quarterbacks to be accepted.
