Open letters.

I recently read a column that was an open letter to the shooter of Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams. I read it because I've always liked that writer.

That wasn't the first time I've seen a column written that way, but It got me to wondering what other writers think of using that format.

It rarely works. Pitts did one to Osama bin Laden once. It was OK.

Most of the time, they suck.

That wasn't the first time I've seen a column written that way, but It got me to wondering what other writers think of using that format.

For every one that gets done right, there's about 5,000 done because the writers have run out of ideas. I'm not a big fan myself, but that's just me.
