Don't get me started on headphones ... that horse is well clear of the barn, and it's not a positive development, but I'm sure that's the old fogey in my talking.

Now you must admit, they makes transcribing quotes much less obtrusive. Especially in the office.

I think that's more a product of this generation growing up burning out their ears on CD players/Xboxes/etc., not necessarily all on the headphones.

Copy editors, agate and the like should NOT wear headphones...reporters...only when transcribing. If part of your duty is to answer the phone and listen to the scanner, don't listen to music with headphones.
This, coming from a non-fogey (unless you consider 33 old).

The only good thing about our design being done at another paper is it's just sports in the office after 7 on most nights.
Of course, since it's a two-man show, there's a few nights a week when there is only one person in the newsroom at night.

We're in the corner of the newsroom, but no partitions or anything...but yes, after coming back from games, we are often the only ones in the office along with our press guys in the back.

Not a fan of everyone plugging in and plugging away shift either, but I have to admit that I do it myself. I usually don't listen to music, though. I listen to podcasts and have it loud enough to hear and still to the point where I can hear phone ringing or someone talking to me.

Most nights I'm by myself, or just with one other person, so sometimes the headphones are the only things that keep me from going insane.

I listen to music on my iPhone just about every day, but not too loud to where I can't hear people talking to me or a phone ringing on the other side of the newsroom.

The loud newsroom, with all manner of banter, bull**** and activity, makes a shift 1,000 times better than coming to work in a morgue where everyone plugs in and ignores everyone else.
