NIGHT SPORTS EDITOR Reports to the Sports Editor
We’re seeking a person who can help take a talented staff and a good section and make it better. The ideal candidate will be a strong leader with solid line-editing, headline-writing skills and news judgment. The night sports editor will run the day-to-day operation, working with the sports editor and sports desk to plan content, and the sports designer to oversee production to ensure the department meets nightly deadlines. We want a creative person who can raise the quality and quantity of our staff’s work and can work well with other departments. The candidate needs energy, enthusiasm and a passion for quality and integrity.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
--Supervising and managing the night sports desk, which will usually includes 3-5 copy editors and reporters.
--With the sports editor and staff, developing “tomorrow’s†news budget and overseeing content of “tomorrow’s†section, which should provide a lively mix of local, national and international stories and photos.
--Representing the sports department at the nightly news meeting.
--Assisting the online sports supervisor to the keep sports web site current and lively.
--Developing weekly staffing schedules for night desk and assigning reporting and photo coverage of key events.
--Assisting in development of project and story ideas, and long-range planning of key events; anticipating issues of concern to readers.
--Providing regular critiques and annual evaluations of the sports desk staff.
--Meeting regularly with sports editor to discuss stories and concerns
--Assisting in recruitment and training on student-liaisons and interns.
--Assisting sports editor in management of correspondents budget.
--Managing the department when the sports editor is off or away.
--Performing other duties as assigned by the sports editor and managing editor/features.
EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE: College degree or equivalent experience required; five years of daily newspaper experience, with at least three years in a supervisory capacity; experience on a copy desk and/or in digital media is preferred; experience as a sports reporter helpful.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES/CHARACTERISTICS:
--Knowledge of all sports is very important, and familiarity with New England region professional and collegiate sports is a plus.
--Must be able to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously and work well under deadline pressure.
--Must have management and interpersonal communication skills.
--Must have technical online/web skills to enhance the development of print and online editions.
