Tim Griffin is no longer the Big 12 blogger. I don't know if he's still with ESPN, but I do know that position is being replaced. Can't say who just yet.

The should hire B.G. Brooks, formerly of the Rocky Mountain News. Although Brooks' name wasn't among the ones I've heard mentioned.

Hire is done. Not ready to be divulged, I don't think.

My understanding is that it was a two-year deal that Tim wasn't sorry to see end. He traveled from his San Antonio base far more than he thought he would, and almost every Big 12 team's fans thought he was biased against them.

When Butch was at the RMN he was the best Big 12 writer by a longshot. Plenty of good ones, plenty of very good ones, but he's the best. I doubt many would even bother to argue that.

The problem with the bloggers is they are unable to pound pavement. They don't go to the weekly media days and in college football that is sometimes the only way you get things.

Unlike the NFL, which everyone knows everyone, you have to massage sources in college. It's hard if you aren't there daily on a college beat to get anything out of that school because of the tyrant/dictatorship/totalitarian media policy.

ESPN would be better off hiring a beat guy to do side blog work at each BCS school on a contract basis. Instead of $100,000 for one blogger, how about $10,000-$20,000 for a freelancer in the area for the season.

Essentially, ESPN hires beat writers for every BCS team out there. I like some of the blogs, it's a good secondary read. But, they don't break news because they are on an island.

Not sure that would work, at least when it comes to breaking news. I doubt the host paper of the "contract worker" would be too happy seeing news bring broken on ESPN.com instead of the paper's site.

The WWL used to have freelance writers for football and hoops -- by conference. In Bristol they understood you broke news for your paper. The work was enjoyable, quite cumbersome during NCAA tournament time, but you could make some pretty good coin.

The web editors back then were both decent guys.
