Need Help: Book Proposal

I've lined up some literary agents and will be sending out my proposal soon. Anyone know what I need to do to protect my work? Is a copyright symbol on my manuscript all I need?

My book is a memoir on teaching in an inner city school.

To be official, go to copyright.gov for instructions. Or you can also just add the header "Copyright 2009 By Ickey Shuffle. All rights reserved." That gives you basic protection.
