Idol's always been a douche, but his three albums with Generation X were pretty good. The first one was actually great and the next two weren't bad.

He really became an embarassment after going solo though. In the mid-80s, I remember telling new-wave girls I was into punk and they'd say, "Oooh, like Billy Idol?" No.

True, but give him credit for Cradle of Love. I don't know if he had anything to do with it, but that was the best music video ever.
Maybe not the best, but the girl was DAMN hot.

Threadjack over.

Maybe you had to be 11 in 1984 to like him, but Billy Idol rocks. "Rebel Yell" is an excellent album.

"Eyes Without A Face" is one of the great singles of the '80s.

And yes, the girl in the "Cradle of Love" video was unspeakably hot. Turns out Billy's motorcycle accident wasn't such a bad thing! Had he not been incapaticated, he would have done more in the video than sneer a couple times and maybe there wouldn't have been any room for the hot chick.

If you guys don't have anything nice to say, just don't say anything at all.

It's Christmas, dudes. Try a little holiday cheer. It won't leave a scar. I promise.

If you make an effort, you, too, can be simply having a wonderful Christmas Time.

But if that damned McCartney song comes on the radio, shoot yourself in the face. It's called pain displacement. But you may have to shoot yourself twice, because that song makes me want to gouge out my eyes.

In any case,

Merry Christmas
Make that two of us.
That song makes me want to shoot my radio.

Play this post backwards.
(I buried Paul....)

Feliz Navidad is horrible, but when I saw this thread, the first thing I wanted to write down was a CD of holiday covers by .... BILLY IDOL! Saw the CD at a Best Buy and wanted to vomit right there in the store. Can you imagine Billy Idol crooning Frosty The Snowman? Ugh.
I saw that a while back and had similar thoughts.
"It's a nice day for a WHITE CHRISTMAS!"
It's a nice day to... STAAARRT AGAAIN.... OWW!"

Speaking of Rod the Mod, I was just reading a story on him in Rolling Stone.

I have zero interest in his standards albums (that's the kind of **** my mother wants for Christmas) but has anyone heard his new rock covers album? Just curious because, with the odd exception, Rod was always better doing someone else's material.

I believe the subtitle to the album is "Mailing It In."

If you need to wash your ears of bad Christmas music, you can always put on some Robert Earl Keen:

Carve the Turkey
Turn the ball game on
Mix margaritas when the eggnog's gone
Send somebody to the Quickpak Store
We need some ice and an extension cord
A can of bean dip and some Diet Sprites
A box of tampons, Marlboro Lights
Haleluja everybody say "Cheese"
Merry Christmas from the family

And Fenian SLAMS it home!!!!

Maybe "SLAMS IT HOME!!!!" wasn't the best way to put it in this context.

I hear Jose Feliciano, and think of the version a co-worker of mine used to sing around the office: "Police stopped my car/police stopped my car"...

Billy Idol is quite underrated, IMO. Rebel Yell was a very good album, and some of the lesser-known songs were good, too, like Flesh For Fantasy and Catch My Fall. And the follow-up album with Forgot To Be a Lover wasn't bad, either.

And, yes, the chick in the Cradle of Love video was hot, but she still didn't prevent these awful lyrics from being seared into my memory:

Rock the cradle of love
Rock the cradle of love
Yes the cradle of love

I get it, Billy. It's a cradle of love. Thanks for playing.

Oh, and to get back to the Christmas thing, I like Elton John's Step Into Christmas but the fadeout is repetitive; Eartha Kitt's version of Santa, Baby is good but Madonna's sucks; I can handle The Christmas Song if it's Nat King Cole [easily the best version] or Jack Jones, anyone else, uh-uh; and a crappy song I'd forgotten about until I heard it the other day is 'Hey, Santa' by Wilson Phillips.

I was going to mention it was one of the, if not THE, first albums I liked from start to finish. The deep tracks were very good there. Catch My Fall was excellent. And remember Blue Highway?

"Catch My Fall" and "Blue Highway" were great as was "Do Not Stand In The Shadows".

I can't listen to josh groban emote his way through "O Holy Night" - or anything else for that matter. But he really does that song an injustice.

I do confess, however, that Alabama's "Chrismas In Dixie" gets the room dusty. Came around on the CD last night just as I was hanging the ornament from the Peabody.

Just heard Dan Fogelberg "Another Auld Lang Syne" for the first time of the season today crossing into Georgia....
Great song.
Unlike "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time," for which Paul McCartney should be shot.
and I did just hear that "Merry Christmas From the Family" by Montgomery Gentry refrenced earlier this thread.
Classic redneck Christmas country.

It has to be "The Christmas Shoes."
Just when you think you can survive it, and you say to yourself, "What would make this really unbearable is a children's chorus right about now," in comes the children's chorus. Lennon's record has the same problem, but it's not as treacly.

Just found this thread, but let me say that I've never heard this song before. Thankfully, too, from your words.

My least favorite has to be Chestnuts Roasting On an Open Fire.

That's "The Christmas Song." Not only does it fellate reindeer in hell, it has an absurdly presumptuous title.
