Charlotte cutting 20 positions ... five in newsroom ... hearing other McClatchy papers will be making cuts as well ...

Interesting, or maybe strange, how McClatchy is trumpeting profit-sharing "bonuses" for its employees and then, oh by the way, continuing to slash jobs here and there. What's up with that?

Also, how good is your 2% bonus when your furloughs add up to a 4% loss?

It's called smoke and mirrors. They empty your wallet, give half of it back to you, and expect you to feel grateful they didn't keep it all.

Heard the KC Star made cuts, unsure on number or if any were in sports.

And they don't mind if you recall fondly and cautiously those former colleagues who took 100% pay cuts.

In the case of most newspaper companies, the smoke and mirrors amounts to a couple of ounces of dry ice and shard of broken glass, but they act like people won't see through it.

32 cuts in Sacramento, nine in the newsroom.

It also appears the Bee hasn't filled this position: http://www.sportsjournalists.com/forum/threads/80306/. And probably never will.
