India's National Crime Records Bureau last week reported that 8,233 Indian women were killed in 2012 in dowry-related violence, or nearly one per hour. The incidence of dowry deaths grew by nearly 3% over the previous five years, and torture at the hands of a husband or family increased by 5.4%, with 99,135 cases reported by survivors in 2011.

I live in a city with a huge Indian population and grew up in a city with an even larger one. I have found it quite rare to meet an Indian man older than, say, 40 who has the slightest amount of respect for women. The men born in Canada, sure - but not the ones born there.

That's interesting. When I was growing up, I had two close friends who were Sikh and while their fathers treated their mothers very well (at least as far as I could see) the grandparents who lived with them would treat the mothers like ****, even in front of the kids and guests and the wives never really said boo about it. It was just accepted.
