Debauched story in SB Nation on Mel Hall - sexual predator.
Lengthy but worth the read if only the first chapter which might be
the most bizarre.

This is a side note to what a horrible person Mel Hall is, but I will never cease to be amazed by parents' ability to be so stupefyingly clueless in the pursuit of athletic glory. Every single one of these cases happened right under their noses, often in their own house and sometimes during the same timeframe Mel was banging the moms.

A bajillion times this ...

He's now an inmate in the Allred Unit, in Iowa Park, Texas, some 130 miles northwest of the Metroplex. The prison has a national reputation for brutality.

Good good good.

I think "stupefyingly clueless" is giving them too much credit. The parents in the first section were pimps.

I covered Sluggo and he definitely was a strange guy. That whole era of Yankee baseball was weird.

His bodyguard was "The Rent is Too Damn High" guy? Wow.

But at least most of the girls got scholarships. Who needs newspaper coverage when you can have an ex-major leaguer molesting your kid?

The story of the first girl absolutely blew my mind. He buys a car and builds them a swimming pool in just two weeks after meeting them and takes her to the prom and they didn't think anything was happening?

Blew my mind too. And what about The Yankees? They put her prom photo
with Mel in the family section of yearbook. Was there no adult who would
have said something is a bit off here. How about school administrators
when Mel was pulling up to the front doors in his limo.

This was also around the same time when Louis Polania got arrested in
Milwaukee for being in his hotel with underage girl.

I mean, they let this grown man sleep in the same bedroom as their teen-aged girl. Where is that even remotely appropriate?

How many girls did this guy molest?

A lot more than the ones we know about from the story, it sounds like.

Imagine how efficient the social media age would have been for Mel.

With The Yankees drawing less than 2 mil a year at that time I just don't think that
they were as image conscious as they are now

At my church anyone who works with kids/youth has to go through abuse prevention training once a year. It's a very unpleasant afternoon of videos, let me tell you. What strikes me about this story is how similar it is to several of the stories in those videos: Predator cultivates the family as much as he cultivates his victim. Indeed, often the family is an unwitting abetter of the abuse (although as Amy points out, the first family in this story doesn't seem all that unwitting).

What I find even more crazy is that he was a millionaire major league ballplayer. There weren't enough women over 18 for him to ****? Why spend so much time, money and effort to go after 14 and 15 year-olds.

Um, because he liked em young? Seems evident that was a big part of the attraction.

And yes, the parental FAIL is appalling here.

When this was happening, I worked with a kid fresh out of high school who was from Fairfield, and knew this girl. He told me the whole story at the time. It was common knowledge in Fairfield that Mel Hall was living with this girl and her family.

When you're picking the girl up from school in a limo, it's not like you're hiding it. Weird to read about it so much later.

And as the author noted, the Yankees' PR director from that era is now executive director of the Hall of Fame.

Great read (if difficult to get through at times). The author also wrote about Dave Meggett earlier this year:

He gave her a Cavalier? A Cavalier? That should have been the end right there. Cheap *******.
