If I see a snake in my yard, I usually pick it up (as long as it isn't rattling) and relocate it somewhere away from the house.

Carpet snake. Generally harmless, but avoid close contact - ie. hugs.

Depends on the snake. Venomous ones and others known to suck eggs were dead on sight back on the farm. We let king snakes and harmless grass snakes go.
