The Sioux City Journal, an innovative 40,000 circulation daily newspaper in Northwest Iowa, is looking for an editor to help guide our sports department.

The right candidate will be a talented journalist with a demonstrated ability to write and report, design vibrant, reader-friendly pages, write clear and compelling headlines and be a ruthless editor of copy. You must be able to manage an experienced group of full-time sportswriters and part-time staffers, help execute a series of new online sports initiatives and be able to work collaboratively with the other members of our newsroom management team. The Managing Editor-Sports will work closely with our Sports Editor to establish the overall philosophy of our section but ultimately will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the department.

Our small but talented sports staff covers prep sports in the tri-state area -- Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota. We also cover four competitive NAIA colleges, a Division I university (University of South Dakota) and three minor league professional teams (hockey, indoor football, baseball).

Odd title. Can't tell from the description but it sounds like what most places call an assistant/associate/deputy sports editor.
Is this spot above or below the SE?

Good catch. Interesting question. I've been waiting for someone to come in and comment on this one.

My first thought is that it was above the sports editor -- because of the title, first of all. If it's assistant sports editor why not just say assistant sports editor? The day-to-day duties don't make me think it's a subordinate position, just because of how small a shop it is. And a 30-second google search tells me the sports editor is a long, long, longtime vet. So my theory is that it's a higher position -- a way to go in a new direction, while letting the SE retain his title. (The top editor is fairly new, and from outside the newsroom, and apparently an up-and-comer in the Lee chain, so he may have his own plans.)

But the Mod Squad does bring up a valid concern, now that I think about it. My application isn't in the e-mail just yet.

Anyone have any insight/educated speculation on this one?

The ME for sports supervises the sports editor, if there is one. My last shop was Lee, and they had an AME for sports and a sports news editor (who booked the section and supervised the night operation), but no sports editor in title.

saw this posted again on jjobs.com. apparently they did not get the field of candidates they'd hoped. by the way, it is the supervising position. i would have been happy to apply just to see where it went and if it would have been a great fit, but did not get a great vibe when i sniffed around a little. i'll be interested to see who they get.

My only guess is there were a lot of people overqualified for the job. Though, that was the worst excuse I heard when I was unemployed.
