This makes me want to throw up. And it's not confirmed. So take it for what it is.

But the number I just heard is 225. All from the newsroom.

God help us.

Re: LA Times layoffs rumor

How big IS the newsroom? That's a lot of people.
Anybody knows if this is true, you know how to reach me.

By the way, this isn't the big one Mizzou talked about earlier. So there's another big one out there.

Re: LA Times layoffs rumor

god, i hope that one is never confirmed.

Re: LA Times layoffs rumor

LAT has the second biggest newsroom in the country. I think they have 800 some newsroom employees. I know only the NYT is bigger, and they have around 1,300.

But, as Moddy would agree, that one would make a lot of sense after this one...

From The Pipeline:

We haven't heard the number. We are waiting.
But, we're guessing between 175 and 200. The number is so big it it will be a slow roll out to keep things legal and not trigger WARN Act requirements, which kick in with mass layoffs of more than 50 people.

So 49 a month for four months...

Re: LA Times layoffs rumor

Or closer to five. Number may be a bit higher.

However, if those laid off can show a pattern designed to circumvent the WARN act, could they not take LAT to court?

Among the exceptions to the WARN act: if 50-499 workers lose their jobs and that total is less than 1/3 the total active workforce at a single employment site.

Grifter, I think VJ pretty much gave it away.
I have heard nothing official.

Re: LA Times layoffs rumor

wasn't sure there since we haven't heard anything official today.

Re: LA Times layoffs rumor

That IS the rumbling - let's just hope it is wrong.

Re: LA Times layoffs rumor

Wow, just wow.
All I can say is that I am really glad I have a job right now.
And I really feel for the people who have a giant ax over their heads.

Re: LA Times layoffs rumor

Well, considering there are Singleton-esque situations going on at other Tribune papers (Hartford, Baltimore), it's not surprising. Jaw-dropping, staggering and disbelieving, yes, but, really, not surprising. Still, I know more than a few people at the LAT. Not a good time. For them, or anyone.
