Are these facts surprising?

College Park, Md., August 14, 2007—The people who run the nation’s journalism and mass communication schools are overwhelmingly white, and two-thirds of them are male—even though about two-thirds of JMC students today are female.
Well then the students should immediately be promoted to Deans and Professors

BTW This report came from the Phillip Merrill College of Journalism. How dare the University of Maryland name its Journalism College after a white male. They should change the name to the Jim Vance College of Journalism, but they should not give the Merrill family their money back.

Those findings come from a new survey of JMC administrators by Thomas Kunkel, dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. Kunkel is the new president of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication, and his study was released by ASJMC at its annual meeting over the weekend in Washington.

And if Thomas Kunkel had the courage of his report, he should resign his white ass now.

“Collectively, the people running our journalism and mass-comm programs don’t look much like America, and they don’t even look a lot like their own student bodies, which are now pretty much two-to-one female,” he said. “Like the media industries, we’ve got to work harder and smarter on this problem. That means everything from better mentoring of female and minority faculty to cultivating media interest among students of color when they’re still in our elementary and secondary schools. We simply need more talent in the pipeline.”

Every department of every University should reflect the demographic proportions of the community where they are located, including the Division 1 athletic teams

To be fair, the broadcast wing of the department is led by two women, one white and one back. Both the radio and TV.

J-schools are primarily white, so why should anyone be surprised that the administrators are white as well?

Agree with heyabbott: This Kunkel character is kvetching that people just like him keep getting jobs just like his. Then quit, you jackass, and open it up for the folks you apparently feel are excluded. Or is that your approach only now that you've got yours?

Besides, what is this guy talking about? If two-thirds of the students are female, then they're already "in the pipeline" in big numbers. Or shouldn't journalism instructors and deans actually have real-world experience as journalists?

As for that working "harder and smarter" blather, if that is what they are teaching at Merrill, then by all means replace Kunkel right away. With a woman. With a minority. With a potted plant. Anything that won't preach the "harder and smarter" corporate nonsense.

That's reserved for the exclusive use of publishers and editors-in-chief.

Female journalism students are only "in the pipeline" to be journalists. What matters are how many female journalists are tenure-track professors with an eye on administration. Those two populations do not correlate.

Thanks, Spock.
If the classes are already 2/3 full of females, what's with the emphasis on cultivating interest among elementary and secondary students? Or is that only for minorities?
And since when must a department be run and curriculum taught only by people who look and pee like the folks in the classes?

More no-**** news just broke: sky is blue, grass is green, people are stupid.

So the **** what?
