More Ho Ho Ho stuff? Just saw a friend's Facebook feed that he's been laid off. Never mind that my man does an outstanding job and covers a major beat at this paper - the one position you'd think they would NOT eliminate? This business confuses me more every day.

Places love to get layoff off the books by the end of the calendar year. That's why there are typically so many cuts this time of year and fewer in the first quarter of the year...

There have been a few places that have handled layoffs as well as they could... They let those who will be going know early and then they have a month or two to get a headstart on finding another job. In a few instances, other staff movement has saved people and the person was spared.

Unfortunately, that's the exception. What is more standard is being told on Wednesday that you're safe and being let go on Friday.
