Is Jeff Kent really that stupid?

I'm not going to miss this opportunity to bash Simers.

I was going through newspapers yesterday, and saw a column where he said he wore a Giants sweatshirt into the Dodgers clubhouse. Perhaps somebody can explain to me how that meets the highest professional standards.

I will concede that Simers probably does not a good deal about the NFL, which does a heckuva lot of good in Los Angeles, which doesn't have an NFL franchise. He doesn't know the first thing about hockey, really doesn't understand basketball, and would probably be in the lower 25 percent of reporters in a major league clubhouse when it comes to understanding baseball.

I can't see how anybody with that little knowledge is really worth reading. He is not a funny person, either. as my parents used to describe some people, he is a BS artist.

It's hard to hold him to any kind of standard since nobody in the country has a job like his.

I've been at events with Simers but never met him. A few years ago I was out with a bunch of writers and it just turned into a Simers rip fest. One of the guys from the LA Times who was with us, said, "Oh, come on, he's not that bad..."

I enjoy reading his stuff, but apparently his antics make life hell for his beat writers.

And that job is?.... Journalist? Sports Columnist? Professional Wrestler?

I think other people have those jobs and do them more successfully.

I was waiting to talk to someone and his locker was next to Kent's. So I was standing nearby. This was a large clubhouse and I was in no way blocking Kent from getting to/from his locker. Still, after a minute or so, he looks up at me and snarls something along the lines of what are you doing standing here? I start to explain that I'm waiting for the guy whose locker's next to Kent's. Just then, his own teammate yells at Kent basically to back off and shut up because I'm waiting for the guy whose locker's next to Kent's and not Kent. Kent sheepishly turns around and glares in his locker.

That's an old Jeff Kent trick. After you explained you weren't waiting for him, that should've been the end of the discussion. If he had anything else to say, you should've told him where to get off. Kent is a piece of work.

Can't argue with any of the takes on Kent.

Scully is maybe the greatest baseball voice ever. He's certainly in the discussion.

I don't get what the big deal about Kent's statement regarding SCully is. "Scully talks too much" is pretty damn tame compared to "Scully doesn't know anything," even if that's the insinuation. Yes, the later quote of ""I've been here four years and I have never seen Vin Scully down here in the clubhouse," Kent said. "How does Vin Scully know me? How does Vin Scully know Derek Lowe?"" is pretty stupid on his part. But he was indeed baited by Simers.

I've said before that I enjoy Simers. I think he does provide a certain insight and I like how he scoffs at the hero worship we have bestowed on athletes. I also think his antics are often too much and uncalled for, but by and large I find him an entertaining read.

It's sad that we laud him for actually going to the clubhouse and facing the music for what he writes. That should be standard for a columnist. Unfortunately, it isn't.

Seriously.

I covered all his years in SF and he was at times grumpy, but he always made time for the beat writers and seemed to have an understanding that they deserved a little more from him a TV or radio guy that he'd never seen before. In fact, after Kent and Bonds got into a fight in the dugout in 02, Kent said he'd talk about it, but only to the beat writers!

He got surly later in his Giants career, mostly after the motorcycle/"car wash" incident was exposed.

And I wouldn't say people in the Giants clubhouse preferred Bonds. I think it's apples and oranges. Sometimes Bonds was better, sometimes Kent was better. Some players preferred one or the other.

Another interesting thing: Bonds seemed to get more friendly in his old age, and Kent went the other way.

Never really had a problem with either Kent or Bonds. Mizzou is the first person I've heard say something bad about Scully. I'd like to read more about it.
