I am a little indifferent on my upcoming career change. I've worked for newspapers throughout high school, college and since I graduated two and a half years ago. But, I'm sick of being furloughed and all the crap that goes along with working at a newspaper. I think I am going to miss covering stories and being able to have the television on during March Madness, etc.

I'm thankful the paper I work for now allowed me to launch Facebook and Twitter campaigns for our company because the new company said they need someone to do that. They also need someone to edit their web site, so I guess the skills do transition elsewhere ... just had to look hard enough.

I start my new career in advertising in a few weeks.

Excellent that you've got a place to land. That's the main battle fought and won right there.

The best advice I have is to go into your new job with an open mind. I enjoyed working in a newsroom, and there are still things I miss very much about it, but looking back it wasn't The One True Path to Professional Happiness some make it out to be. Every job has components that are aggravating, people who are awesome (and not-so-awesome!), and occasional highs of fulfillment. The trick is in finding the right balance, and there really are lots of occupations out there where a person can find that balance.

I learn at the beginning of the year whether or not I will be chosen as one of three finalists for a position outside of the newspaper business. It is a communications specialist position and pays two and a half times more than I am making now as a sports reporter. If I get it, I will be excited to be out of the business, but will miss some things about it as well. We'll see what happens.

Yeah the pay at my new gig is nothing to write home about, but certainly more than I am making now.
