At New Orleans Saints camp in 1998(?), rookies had to "run a gantlet" in the dark down the hall of the players' dorm as veterans hit them with pillows and other objects. Linebacker Andre Royal, one of the most criminally menacing players I ever had the joy of interviewing, decided to hit the rookies in the face with a sock full of quarters. He was traded to the Colts not long after that.

If I remember correctly, Cam Cleeland was injured pretty badly and his father went ape****.

My experience has been there are usually about two veterans who give a **** about this stuff. The rest of them would rather spend their free time drinking beer and chasing local talent near the camp site. It tends to be much more fun than holding down some guy and cutting his hair.

Given the amount of attention this kind of stuff has gotten this year - wouldn't be surprised to hear about a high school or college team having an "incident" in the next month.

Wouldn't be a bad story idea - better than the typical "Joe Third-String primed for breakout season" feature.

If it's anything like a fraternity, that's how it is. There were about three dudes who would get super trashed for that **** — well, everyone would get super trashed, but only three would get really take the "make them earn it" and "be an asshole" thing to heart. Everyone else just kidded around a little.

No, it doesn't mean the media should continue the Gainesville love fest, but Dez Bryant throws a complete hissy fit over carrying a vet's shoulder pads, yet Tebow not only endures this hazing, but also shows up to a scrimmage in Denver sporting this insanely bad 'do, insists it's absolutely no big deal and is merely part of bonding and team building?

Has the media gone too far in kissing Tebow's rear end? Sure. And just how much of that is Tebow's responsibility?

Agreed. The monk cut in particular does a lot to say "in on the joke", both in training camp and in the way he's perceived around the country.

it's only hair, this is nothing compared to what used to happen.
