Juneteenth

Two big things happened on June 19 that shouldn't be forgotten.
In 1862, slavery was outlawed in U.S. territories
In 1865, Uniont troops arrived in Galveston, Txas with news that the civil war was over and all slaves were free.

Somewhere, Charles Sumner takes another aspirin and smiles.

Now that's a quality reference. Nice work, F_B.

If I'd have taken odds on who would have picked that one up, you'd have been 6-5.

But this time he's applying the beating to Preston Brooks.

You're far too kind.

What I don't get is why challenging Sumner to a duel was beneath Brooks' honor, but breaking a cane over his head was totally copacetic.

I guess if you've managed to talk yourself into slavery being OK, you can resolve pretty much anything to your own satisfaction.

AUSTIN, Texas - An angry crowd beat a man to death after a vehicle he was riding in struck and injured a young girl, police said Wednesday. Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred Tuesday night.

The driver had stopped to check on the little girl at the entrance to an apartment complex when a group of men attacked him, authorities said. The passenger, David Rivas Morales, 40, got out to try to help the driver, but the crowd turned on him, said police Commander Harold Piatt.

Morales was beaten to death by as many as 20 men and left lying in a parking lot, Piatt said. A preliminary autopsy listed blunt force trauma as the cause of death.

The little girl, 3 or 4 years old, was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver, who got away from the crowd, is cooperating with investigators, police said.

I thought it was interesting that the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper story didn't mention the race or ethnicity of the victim. (http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=622207)

Man Pulled From Car, Beaten After Juneteenth
Michael George/WTMJ

MILWAUKEE - Pat Kasthurirangaian said he doesn't know the people who pulled him from his car and brutally beat him. He doesn't know why they did it. He has some serious injuries after a senseless beating that took place as people left Tuesday's Juneteenth celebration.

I'm not an expert, obviously, but Kasthurirangaian sounds like a South Asian name. Indian, Sri Lankan, Thai, someplace like that. If I had to guess.

It's very likely a Hmong name. The Hmong, who migrated from Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in the mid 70s, mostly congregated in Wisconsin and Minnesota. The racism shown towards the Hmong is pretty shocking in some areas of both states.

Before reading this thread, I wasn't clear on what Juneteenth is. But I have seen the term several times recently. In fact, there's a story on the wire about some people beating the passenger of a vehicle to death after the vehicle hit a child, or something of that general nature. I noticed in that story a mention of a juneteenth celebration. But I really need to get a better idea of what this is.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is an annual holiday in fourteen states of the United States. Celebrated on June 19, it commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas. The holiday originated in Galveston, Texas; for more than a century, the state of Texas was the primary home of Juneteenth celebrations.

<snip>

Though the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1, 1863, it had little immediate effect on most slaves’ day-to-day lives, particularly in Texas, which was almost entirely under Confederate control. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived on Galveston Island to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of its slaves.
