I was not a huge Queen fan at the time, and they were even pretty tired by 1985 for most people. But this is the greatest recording of a live performance there is, in my opinion. Freddie Mercury had the crowd in the palm of his hand by the time they transitioned into Radio Ga Ga and it just carried through the rest of the set.

I think there's a public misconception now that Queen was a juggernaut at the top of the world going in to Live Aid. Actually they'd been in somewhat of a career dip since about 1980 ("Under Pressure" was kind of a surprise left-field hit for both Queen and Bowie). But they killed it to death at Wembley.

As I recall the rest of the band thought Bono had ****ed up their performance by stretching it out and going out to the crowd. He was kind of sheepish and apologetic. Then the reaction hit the next day and everyone said Queen and U2 stole the show.

In 1985 they still hadn’t broken through. Of course, people with any musical taste was well aware of their work, but we were still a couple years from Joshua Tree.

My younger daughter is obsessed with Queen and Elton John, so we watched some of the videos from the 1985 shows. I am reminded that Madonna, at her peak, was absolutely transcendent, just an otherwordly talent and beautiful to boot.
