Do the owners really think Goodell is the best person for this job? If they do, then sure, $40M/year is legitimate compensation. But given the player unrest, the PR debacles (Rice, for instance) and his clashing with more than one powerful owners, why on Earth would they give him this contract?
 
The weird thing about the NFL commissioner is that your job is to be a human piñata. Take the criticism from various owners and players. It isn't like the commish instigates and pushes policy - he's like the executive director of a non-profit carrying out the wishes of the owners (board of directors). The owners negotiate the TV packages and the various committees instigate rule changes. The commish is the water-carrier, the front-man. Kind of like Bill Hancock with the BCS and now CFP - it's not HIS policy - he just has to sell it to the media and take the hits.

There's a lot in what you say here, but in theory, a commissioner should also be in charge of long-range planning, as Rozelle was. Of course, Rozelle was a sports business genius. Those don't come along every day. The issues that threaten the NFL's money spigot are both long-term and hard to even grasp, let alone confront. How do you take some of the violence out of football? I got no answers so I don't blame Roger for the same. But Goodell's erratic blundering is a constant problem the league could fix by finding someone more content to be the pinata, rather than acting as a weak tyrant, the worst form of government possible.
 
I certainly don't know this for sure, but perhaps Goodell will derive some strength of character from being more secure in his position.

That was my thought, too. Jones pretty much ensured Goodell's job security, at least in the short term, by threatening to sue his fellow owners over it.

Nice timing, too, with the league having an ugly week regarding player safety and the punishment of players for on-field behavior.

Or you could look at it as the long-term fortunes of the NFL are bleak, and Goodell's the best guy to help squeeze every last cent out of the operation before it turns south. Maybe five years is about all there is for that, maybe 10, I don't know.
 
I'm just curious ... those of you counting the days to the demise of the NFL, just what do you think is going to replace it as an entertainment option? Rugby on NBC?
