Home Depot employee looking for job after stopping alleged thief

Dustin Chester is job hunting this week, after The Home Depot fired him and the general manager for thwarting a thief from running away with a pocket full of stolen cash.

Last week, the 24-year-old department manager confronted a man who was standing by a soda machine in front of the Murfreesboro store off Old Fort Parkway holding a crowbar and a wad of cash. When the suspect started running, Chester said his instincts took over.

He was fired Monday for violations of company policy in the incident.

"When he ran, I ran after him," he said. Chester caught the thief and restrained him in the parking lot until police arrived.

Chester was shocked to find out that for managers and most employees, catching and detaining thieves is against company policy.

"The district manager told me that we are supposed to let thieves walk away; it blew my mind
," said Chester, a one-time employee of the year.

The Home Depot said its policy, which directs workers to notify loss prevention specialists or police to handle criminal situations, is in place to protect its employees and customers.

"The associates involved were not following company policy, resulting in this disciplinary action," said Don Harrison, spokesman for the Atlanta-based company. "Safety is a primary focus for our company."

I understand the reason for the policy, but firing the guy? I hope he sues.

Like most corporate policies, this one is to cover their own rears. Might get sued, you know.

Disagree.

If you own a retail store, whether it's Home Depot or Mom & Pop's Pillow Shop, the first thing you tell your employees is, "Give them the money and don't argue" .

It's not about lawsuits. It's that the money in the cash register ain't worth getting killed.

Besides, they're insured.

Still, firing that guy was reprehensible

Reminds me of the Miami columnist who got fired for tape-recording the phone call with the local pol who ended up killing himself.

Fired? Why not a stern talking-to, a reminder about policy, a week without pay? But fired?

All Home Depot needed to do was have some spokesperson dweeb tell reporters that the employee broke with company policy, but that they appreciate his efforts.

Maybe Arthur Blank's Home Depot empire would prefer to unleash the hounds on perps. His QB could help him there.

It happened again: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/broward/sfl-flbgoodsamaritan0911nbsep11,0,1176566.story

FORT LAUDERDALE - As the lunch rush started Monday, waiter Juan Canales stopped a carjacker from taking a woman's Honda CRV out of the parking lot where he worked.

Hours later he lost his job.

More bull**** Cover Your Ass crap from management when a little common sense would go a lot farther.

And zero tolerance just escalates the bull****.

As does hiding behind policy: "I'm sorry, Dustin, but there's nothing we can do. This comes directly from Corporate."

Corporate can kiss my ass.

This one has nothing to do w/corporate BS. Sounds like the owner of the joint just didn't like the guy and was looking for an excuse to get rid of him.
