Favorite SI covers

I can't copy covers where I'm at, but my two favorites from a season's worth are the ""44-0" cover after the Bears beat the Cowboys in 1985 and the SB preview cover with a picture of Mike Singletary and a diagram of the 46 defense.

I remember that SB preview cover. A clever touch was making the diagram's William Perry icon a refrigerator.

My favorite is the Michigan cover with Woodson knocking David Boston on his ass

Young'un.

Woodson was the one who -- and had the big punt return and INT.
Marcus Ray was the one who on Boston in midair -- and got the SI cover.

One of my favorite covers, too.

What I like about the older covers -- up until some point in the '90s, maybe -- was that they were so clean and simple; they let the picture tell the story. And that pictured represented the story in sports that week. Now the cover is typically so cluttered, with a headline and a sub-head and teasers to other stories inside, that it 1) looks worse, and 2) doesn't have the same impact.

For example, that shot of Kareem dunking (I think the foldout said "SLAM!" or something like that, after the Lakers won the '87(?) Finals over the Celtics) is gorgeous. But something like the "U.S. Soccer Wants You" cover that someone else posted earlier just looks like a mess to me.

Enjoyed this one immensely. My only wish is that this...

... could have been incorporated into the cover somehow. Alas.

Of course, the Kerry Meier cover could have been used from the Border War in 2008 game also. Defender arriving fashionably late to have a great view of another Meier touchdown.

Now, back to the covers

The unthinkable. United States SOCCER on the cover? You bet. Earnie Stewart's game-winner vs. Colombia.

The ultimate team player, Kerry Meier, was a role player for the 2007 Jayhawks. But it was because of players like him that allowed Kansas to have its best season ever.

Back when boxing was cool, this shot was one of my favorites. Tyson in his intimidating best:

I miss the feeling as a kid of pulling SI out of the mailbox and not putting it down till I had practically read the whole thing. I can honestly say I haven't glanced at an SI other than the Swimsuit Issue in a good 15-20 years.

It used to be the only game and the best game going as far as national sports reading. Now it's fallen victim to the Internet Age the same as newspapers have. Sadly, I can see the day within five years where it folds.

And, ahem, this ...

... is the most memorable cover of my teen years.

what about the Cheryl Tiegs seethru. almost positive it wasn't the cover but i do remember it was in SI.

The Tiegs photo was in the first swimsuit issue after my parents bought me a subscription (which would last more than 20 years). It was the 1978 issue with the Brazilian babe on the cover.

not sure if anyone mentioned it but the Joe Carter HR to beat the Phils is a great one.

This was one of their finest issues:

I don't have a lot of SIs in my house, despite being a subscriber for two years, but I still have that one. For some reason, I've always wanted to keep it.

As for my favorite covers, I'll add this one to the mix just because I was taken aback that it was on the cover and it really got me interested in MMA as a legit sport.
