i think mikaluk's blowup is now tied with mcclendon's 'steal' of first base.

Not even close. McClendon's steal was great because everyone expected him to fling the bag, like everyone else always did. Instead, he strides right off the field with it.

The minor league guy was just nuts, throwing or slamming anything he could get his hands on.

I've got to admit I've never heard that Earl Weaver-with-listeners'-questions thing, which is hilarious. (Or, as Earl would say, "****ing hilarious.") Is that a parody? What's the story?

A few times, I met a guy named John East, who played for Brophy in the ECHL (Hampton Roads Admirals, I think).  East was a fighter who'd hurt his hand and therefore couldn't fight.  He went about five games without dropping the gloves, and Brophy let him hear about it whenever he could.  Calling him a *****, a plumber, all that stuff.  So one night, East finally felt good enough to fight, had three scraps in the first period and got thrown out.  East doesn't even think he touched the puck that night.  In the dressing room in the first intermission, Brophy makes a beeline for East and says:

"Goddamit Easter (spitting the whole time).  That's the best ****ing game you've played all year!"

Brophy is also famous for going into the stands to challenge a fan.  Nothing special, unless you consider that Brophy was armed with a hacksaw.

hey, to each his own. ;D it's like people's view on art. one man's square on a big canvas is another man's modern art. mikalik's slide into the base and squatting at home put him into mcclendon's level for me. the dirt kicking, yelling and gesticulating was just the typical manager-goes-nuts garbage that didn't do anything for me.

There's a Lasorda blowup that they plays clips of on Stern. It sounds like he's yelling at Simers, which would be odd since I don't think Simers was a columnist while Lasorda was the manager in LA. It's a brutal clip, it rivals the Elia one for the worst I've heard from a manager...

That was referenced earlier. It's just Tommy putting on a show, knowing full well it's being recorded. The "TJ" he addresses is Terry Johnson, late Dodgers beat veteran.

I was burning off a CD with several favorite sports theme songs (CBS' NFL Today, MNF to mention a few) and I was able to get the Lasorda blast on Terry Johnson on the CD.

Tommy said something like this: "Get the **** out of here TJ, no I mean it, get the **** out of here! I don't want to ****ing talk to you!"

It was part of an old clip (since deleted) off of Steve Czaban's website four years ago. He has a collage of Lasorda tirades which were funny as hell.

I'll add a basketball one: Tommy Heinsohn when he went nuts over a bad foul call, when Paul Pierce was hit in the mouth. Heinsohn thought it shoud have been a flagrant foul, but was called a hard foul: "They're going to call it a hard foul. They're going to call it a HARD FOUL!?!? These guys are rediculous, these guys are rediculous!!! Absolutely rediculous!!!!

I grew up in Commack not far from the Long Island Arena where the LI Ducks played.  I grew up hearing stories about the league (the league SlapShot was based on), and Johnny Brophy's name came up quite often.  I'd be very grateful if you could post that transcript if you have it.

A buddy relayed a story of Brophy one time when he was coaching in Norfolk. The team is traveling and heading through a tunnel. The movie that the players picked out was Slap Shot. Brophy hit the eject button, opened the door while the bus was moving and threw the tape against the wall.

This was recorded during the 1977 world series between the Yankees and Dodgers, apparently Tommy Lasorda forgot that he was miked when he went out to replace the pitcher, lets just say that Tommy and his hurler and differerent opinions as to whether or not he should stay in the game

there's also the great one about kurt bevacqua right below it where he says when he was getting ready to pitch against a team that had a player like bevacqua that he'd send a limosine to get him to make sure he was in the lineup.

Which is funny, because Bevacqua was an infinitely better player than Lasorda was a pitcher.
