I had never heard this before ...

The new quarterback approached the old quarterback and uttered what will forever go down as the worst introductory line in the history of professional sports.
“Good morning, grandpa!”
Silence.
Rodgers surely recognized the mistake as soon as the words emerged from his lips. But there was no taking it back. “Brett couldn’t believe that,” said Craig Nall, the backup quarterback. “It was like, ‘Grandpa? Who the hell are you?’”

A couple of weeks after the draft, Dylan Tomlinson of Gannett Wisconsin Newspapers was sent 90 miles northeast of Sacramento to Chico, California, to visit with Aaron Rodgers for a profile.
Tomlinson had been on the Packer beat since 2003, and Brett Favre was far from his favorite player. He found the quarterback to be phony, arrogant, thin-skinned. He hated how the team’s notoriously protective PR staff served as his personal brick wall, and laughed as rival journalists left offerings at the shrine of Brett. Through the years Tomlinson had heard dozens of rumors about Favre’s infidelity and drunkenness, yet felt constrained by the bonds of local Packer love to write anything. “People felt loyal to Brett, because in Green Bay he was a football God,” Tomlinson said. “But, just being honest, I couldn’t stand him.”

So Farve has a very public image of being a down-to-earth good-old-boy who likes to joke around. He's just "aw shucks" and all of that. He's an every man. Ask anyone. ... So Rodgers comes and decides to joke around a bit with him, likely having a pretty good idea of who he thinks Brett Favre is. But Rodgers is an asshole for calling him grandpa? This is such a weird story. Why wouldn't a new guy come in and think it would be easy to pal around with Favre. That's all he knew about his personality; it's all everyone knew.

I don't know if much I would joke around with the guy coming into to take my job, especially If I was unsure I wanted to go.
"Good Morning, Grandpa," would be facepalm worthy.

That's being pretty presumptuous. I'm trying to imagine a guy coming into my department and saying that to me. If you don't know somebody personally, you don't say **** like that. There's no way you don't come off like an asshole.

FWIW I will say I did see some factual errors in the stuff I read (maybe minor stuff, like Rob Demovsky wasn't with ESPN way back when).

Neither Rodgers nor Favre spoke to the book's author, Jeff Pearlman, during his reporting.

It seems to me there was a pretty simple way to get your side of the story out there before now, Aaron. But maybe he was too busy glomming on to the Wisconsin basketball team to talk to Pearlman.

The story analyzed the myriad factors for Rodgers’ comparative on-field struggles, and revealed the following details, many of which had previously not been public:

One source, who was close to Rodgers for years but is among the many who have since been cut off by Rodgers entirely, said the quarterback has not spoken to his family since December 2014. Don’t feel too bad, J-Mike. Immediate family members don’t even have his cellphone number. When Mom and Dad sent Christmas presents to the quarterback and his girlfriend that year, the source said, those gifts were mailed back in February. He was set to be the groomsman in the wedding of one of his closest friends, the source said, and texted the day before he couldn’t attend.

He didn’t attend his grandfather’s funeral—the same grandfather he once called before every game. He fired a business manager he’s known since high school. The family was told they were no longer welcome in Green Bay. If Dad wants to attend a game now, he buys tickets on StubHub or goes through another player’s family.
