LIVINGSTON PARISH, La. -- A Mississippi man was arrested Saturday after police say he let his 8-year-old son drive 100-plus miles so he could pass out after drinking.
Police stopped the truck on Interstate 12 near Holden shortly after 6:30 a.m. Saturday and found the boy behind the wheel while his father, Billy Joe Madden, 28, slept in the passenger seat, New Orleans TV station WDSU reported.
Police said Madden's 4-year-old daughter was riding in the backseat.
Troopers said Madden told them he was intoxicated, and fell asleep while his son drove from Hattiesburg, Miss., to Dallas.
Madden was arrested and charged with two counts of child desertion, parent allowing a minor to drive, open container and two counts of no child restraint and no seat belt.
According to troopers, the two children were not injured, and were turned over to Child Protective Services.
