Dept. of Homeland Security wants *all* of us on a no-travel list?

Left. Right. In a box by the door.
Welcome to the United Soviet States of America, apparently.

If true, then there's no question: We have to fire them. All of them. No exceptions.

October 26, 2006

Forget no-fly lists. If Uncle Sam gets its way, beginning on Jan. 14, 2007, we'll all be on no-fly lists, unless the government gives us permission to leave-or re-enter-the United States.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (HSA) has proposed that all airlines, cruise lines-even fishing boats-be required to obtain clearance for each passenger they propose taking into or out of the United States.

It doesn't matter if you have a U.S. Passport - a "travel document" that now, absent a court order to the contrary, gives you a virtually unqualified right to enter or leave the United States, any time you want. When the DHS system comes into effect next January, if the agency says "no" to a clearance request, or doesn't answer the request at all, you won't be permitted to enter-or leave-the United States.

Consider what might happen if you're a U.S. passport holder on assignment in a country like Saudi Arabia. Your visa is about to expire, so you board your flight back to the United States. But wait! You can't get on, because you don't have permission from the HSA. Saudi immigration officials are on hand to escort you to a squalid detention center, where you and others who are now effectively "stateless persons" are detained, potentially indefinitely, until their immigration status is sorted out.

Why might the HSA deny you permission to leave-or enter-the United States? No one knows, because the entire clearance procedure would be an administrative determination made secretly, with no right of appeal.

There might still be a few minutes left in the fourth quarter, but I think we can all pack up our laptops and notebooks. The terrorists have won.

OK, here's a challenge to the supporters of the current administration. As an American, defend this proposed regulation.

These are terrifying times with regard to our civil liberties, and yet more reason for me to be concerned about bringing any children into the world. Does anyone else see this as a possible precursor to re-instituting the draft: essentially sealing the borders to prevent any young potentially draftable folks from going to Canada or overseas?

This is America. The greatest country in the world. Why would you want to go anywhere else?

And no matter what happens in Syria, don't tell the Red Cross because President Stupid is torturing people again.

Friend of mine in the ACLU says this is indeed "pho real."

Will America give a ****? It's time for regular people, outside of us media types, to start bitching up a storm about this ****.

Apathy about important issues like this are killing our country as much as the policies themselves are. People need to get off their ass and take their country back.

And where the **** is the mainstream media coverage of this?

And yes, the terrorists have won. I'm sure the good folks at Starter already have a T-shirt and hat ready for Osama bin Laden to wear in the post-victory celebration.

This is unmitigated bull****.

****ing wow ...

My brother is married to a Japanese woman, and they have two kids, one on the way. Needless to say, they travel to Japan once a year with the kids, and the in-laws come in from Japan every other year. The thought of those good people maybe never seeing their grandkids again because of this ****ing new law ... it makes me want to cry.

Well, at least you guys can stay home and play on-line poker.

Oh, wait...

Well damn, listening to your boy Kerry, we need the draft to get intelligent soldiers into the war.

Why? as long as American Idol is still on the air everything is fine.

Someone tell me this isn't the plot to some Orwellian-type book or movie. Please.

Here's the actual document...
