I will never forget that no-hitter he had at the LLWS -- I was there. The local team was there, but weren't playing that day so I sat in on the game, called the desk as soon as it was over to get some extra space for a sidebar....and then a few days later we find out it was all a sham.

He's still married to a woman older than I am, though.

He was amazing that day. That ball was going in there so fast, I would have been crying if it were me. Course I have no baseball skills whatsoever, but that's just me.

Just looked up my story on the game -- he had 16 Ks that day.
He had about 15 appearances that summer and didn't give up a run. I'd say that's good no matter what...

As a man who was on the younger end of one of those May-December romances (appropriate since my b-day really is in may and my ex's was the day after christmas), I gotta say it makes me smile every time someone jokes with SC about that.

What's funny is that he looks just as old as she is. Could it be that Danny Almonte was actually 23 when he pitched in the LLWS?

He had about 15 appearances that summer and didn't give up a run. I'd say that's good no matter what...

He should have thrown shutout ball. He was twice their age!!!

But I'll give you that there can be vast differences physically at that age thanks to puberty.
As I recall, there was another player on Almonte's team that was HUGE -- like, could have been a high school offensive lineman at 12. He had a grand slam in that game.

But he was a complete man among boys. I remember watching those games going "There is no way he is 12. None." No 12-year-old a.) looks like that and b.) throws like that.

You didn't do a day at Williamsport last summer? They sure do. And some come in 6-foot-8 packages ... and some go 6-3, 215 ...

I like the idea that Almonte's performance was impressive whether he was 14 or 12 that day. But pure street knowledge keeps me from believing it.

I never pitched in Little League; I had an average arm, but no command. Two years later when I was in Senior Division, the all-star coaches had me come in for a few practices as BP pitcher before the Little Leaguers' tournament. Not only could I overpower everyone, about five of them wound up on their butts as my curveball swept over the plate for a called strike.

That's the difference in two years.
