To be fair to us, or at least to me, I didn’t know she existed yesterday so even if we never talk about her again in her own thread her Q rating for me is at and will remain at an all time high.

I once talked to an emigrant Chinese woman who was a second child. She told me that she loved her parents because of the hardships they endured in order to have a second child. I asked the government enforced the policy. It is hard to ban sexual intercourse. The women said that the enforcement mechanism was basically the government had the ability to make anyone's life difficult. She said her parents suffered a lot because the bureaucracy punished her parents. THe woman was born in 1980 so at that time Chinese citizens received food cards. A second child did not receive one and getting into a public school could be hard.

I think Peng Shuai is in a similar situation. She does not have to be in a concentration camp. But the government can still control her. They can take her passport and hence deny her travel abroad. The tennis federation can blackball her so she can not earn a living as a coach or broadcaster. Peng Shuai will have to go along or avoid being marginalized in the society.

And it is a wish the world should probably respect. These protests are not going to help the woman. More publicity just makes her life harder in China. Thsi is not a defense of the Chinese government but just reality.

I’d love to see it, too, but only if the Olympics then get moved and not canceled. Athletes shouldn’t get screwed over here when ultimately the Olympics are for them most of all, and none of this is their fault.

You can't just up and move them in two months. But a mass boycott would be nice to see.
