Newspaper: Calgary Herald
Job listing: Sports Editor
Information: The Editorial Department of the Calgary Herald is looking for a dynamic editor to oversee its Sports department and sports content on a variety of platforms, including the newspaper and its website.

Calgary is a growing city of one million people and the Herald is committed to reflecting the energy and diversity of the city in all fields of coverage, including sports. We're searching for a Sports editor who can build on the department's strong foundation and lead the department in maintaining its reputation as the number one source of sports news, in-depth analysis and compelling features.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful applicant will drive the section daily, lead the department in breaking news from the world of sports, and also be able to bring an innovative approach to features, the packaging of stories and special projects.

The sports editor will also be Web savvy, driving and creating sports content for the paper's website. As well, he/she will oversee sport files to CanWest News Service and provide strong leadership as the Herald continues to transition to a multi-platform media organization.

We're looking for an exceptional editor with a flair for innovation to steer this department, which covers everything from the city's NHL and CFL teams to high-school sports.

He/she will supervise a group of slightly more than a dozen writers, editors, freelancers and columnists, working with them on everything from story development to beat development.

Superior personnel management skills and the ability to flourish in a work environment that emphasizes feedback and teamwork is essential.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will have experience as an editor at a daily newspaper. Experience in sports journalism is an asset, as is experience with online journalism, Web filing and Web-related software. He/she will also be a proven manager who has demonstrated innovation, while possessing exceptional communication, leadership and organizational skills.

Interested applicants are encouraged to submit a resume, cover letter and samples of sections they've edited to:

In case anyone cares, the Calgary Sun sports ed. quit two weeks ago. That could/should be posted soon.

Does the sports editor have to wear red to work every day, or is that just the Saddledome crowd?

Seriously, though, Calgary's a cool city. River Cafe: one of the best dining experiences I've ever had.

Do Americans even have shots at positions like this?

I remember another thread on here noting how it was nearly impossible for a non-citizen to get hired in Canada.
