D-Mac out in Ames?!? Say it ain't so!

As much as McCarney's meant to that program, the next guy had better be a real home run.

Re: DSM Register: ISU's McCarney expected to resign

Latest I heard is that Pollard demanded McCarney make staff changes and he refused.

Pollard's an idiot if he runs McCarney off.

Re: DSM Register: ISU's McCarney expected to resign

Another case of boosters and fans overreacting to a tough season. Never mind that the starting RB, the top three receivers, the All-Big 12 cornerback and one of the offensive linemen are all hurt, half of them out for the year.

Also remember that Iowa State's Big 12 South rotation is Texas, Oklahoma and Texas Tech. Ouch.

Considering all that's against Iowa State in terms of money and, uh, location, it's going to be years before that program is worth a **** again.

Terrible, terrible move fueled by pissy ****stick fans.

It is so. Presser is on right now on KXNO on line and on t.v.. Shaggy, most of the boosters came out and were going to back Mac regardless what happens. Mac has taken State from **** to respectable, but the numbers don't lie. He has taken the Clones to four bowl games in six years, but he has had one 9-win season, several 7-5 campaigns and his last four teams have been inconsistent.

He has never quit on his team, but his team let him down against Kansas. The fan base has been spilt with him. Many wanted him to get one more year, the other side said that it's probably time. This was one of his most talented teams, but they have underachieved, even with key injuries.

Keep this in mind: AD Pollard has been on the job for one year and he has made two coaching changes prior to this evening: firing Wayne Morgan and bringing in Greg McDermott and asking Bobby Douglas to step aside so that they could keep Cael Sanderson and make him the wrestling coach. He's a hatchet man and isn't afraid to pull the trigger. Pollard is building support to renovate and put in luxury boxes at Jack Trice Field and Hilton Coliseum for $138 million.

Football is the face of the school and if they don't win, those plans are dead in the water. If they had to make a change, do it now, let him coach the last two games and let him leave on a high note.

Jamie Pollard's a ****ing idiot and the fans who wanted McCarney out need to shut the **** up and realize they're Iowa ****ing State. The McCarney Era will be remembered as the Golden Age of ISU Football for generations to come.

Does this mean that Greg McDermott becomes "Mac" to the ISU fan base?

McCarney was the final Big 8/Southwest Conference "holdover" coach in football and men's basketball still coaching at the same school.

Of all the guys coaching hoops and football in those two leagues in 1995 it's hard to believe he outlasted every one of them.

Thank you. Iowa State always will be No. 2 in the state behind Iowa, definitely for as long as Ferenz is coaching, anyway.

Armchair, that's funny to read that, because Pollard is an flippant little ******* from what I saw tonight at the presser. Each reporter meekly (in a pussified manner) asked if there was any one moment that was the tipping point, and his reply was "yeah, when you (reporters) kept asking the kids on the team about what will happen to Dan and the rest of the season. Translation = a generous **** you to the reporters and what anyone thinks of him.

The tipping point was during the election coverage last night when the WWL's Ivan Maisel http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2653429 talked to Mac and Mac said to the effect of "I think it's over." Then Mac reiterated that sentiment on his radio show as well. Tom Dienhart thinks that Mac may not be out of work for long: http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=146295

I knew Pollard was going to blow people out once he stepped foot in Ames. He couldn't do at Madison, as long as Barry is running the show. Barry is the common link between Dan and Pollard. Mac coached under Barry, Pollard was the kid wonder in the AD's office.

The fans are picky in this aspect. They hated the former AD Van DeVelde and were happy when he left. After applauding Pollard for firing Morgan, now they don't know what to do tonight.

They are #3. Northern Iowa is in the #2 slot. Go Panthers! :)

Not sure where McCarney will wind up but I know it won't be Miami because Alvarez is not giving up his AD's job to go down there.

This is too bad. A friend of mine has a very close connection to the program, which was invisible before McCarney got there. Records don't lie, but the truth is that it will take a lot more resources to reach another level in football.

Remember the days when Iowa State had a pretty damn lengthy losing streak going on? They'd regularly get thumped by the Big 8 teams by 40-odd points and had trouble beating even 1-AA programs.

A clutch kicker and ISU wins the Big 12 North each of the last two seasons. Iowa ****ing State, the poorest school in the Big 12 surrounded by Iowa and Nebraska.

Was 8 wins the best McCarney could offer? Yep. Can anyone do much better in Ames? Nope.

Back when Jim Criner was running Iowa State into the ground in the '80s Iowa reguarly ran up Sun Belt-level asswhippings on ISU. It was a glorified spring game with 60,000 people in attendance.

In '85, the year Iowa spent a good portion of the year at No. 1, the game was at Iowa State and was being televised. Iowa so thoroughly dominated the Cyclones that TV was using every single filler they could think of.

At that time Iowa State had a cannon they would fire everytime they scored. Iowa was up like 56-0 early in the fourth quarter and they threw it down to the sideline guy who was with the kid in charge of the cannon.

The TV guy said something like "Not much for you to do today, huh?"

"Yeah. I'm thinking about lighting this thing off if we can get a first down."

THAT was Iowa State football prior to Dan McCarney.

The first college football game I ever attended was Iowa-Iowa State in 1987. My dad got us two tickets, and we watched Iowa whip the 'Clones 49-3.
I agree with Armchair - THAT was Iowa State football. McCarney made ISU respectable, which is pretty impressive considering he was recruiting to a wind-tunnel stadium with below-average facilities in freaking Ames, Iowa, which is by no means a cultural hotbed.
McCarney actually scared Iowa - beat them like three, four years in a row at one point, I think. He has Hawk fans' respect, which is no easy matter considering he works at Iowa State. I know he has this Hawk fan's respect.
Jamie Pollard is a grim reaper of an AD. I understand he wants to use football as an engine for his facility improvements, but he seems pretty heartless.
And, reallly, who is Iowa State going to get that's better than McCarney?
This is going to wind up like Ole Miss firing David Cutcliffe after 1 down season. Look where that's gotten them.

You know exactly what it was like, BigRed and Armchair. Watching those ISU teams of Criner and Walden was the butt of every joke from Sioux City to Burlington. At times, I started to feel sorry for the late Pete Taylor and Eric Heft for sitting through one disaster after another at Jack Trice, while Johnny Orr was the king of Hilton Coliseum.

McCarney, after a few hard-knocks years, made them respectable enough that I started to appreciate them and root for them. BigRed, Mac beat Iowa 5 times, in a row.

Thanks for the correction, D-3, on the 'Clones' win streak. I guess like any unpleasant memory, I'd buried it deep in my mind.
But yes, ISU football was the biggest joke in the state of Iowa for many years. Now, it's respectable.
I think this is a mistake for Pollard and ISU.
