Braves sideline guy gets women’s numbers on air

My first thought was lighthearted fun, which means it is probably a pretty good learning opportunity for me to consider the wider picture. Women in the industry are not having it.

Even taking the gender part out of it, which I know you can't, but what on Earth does that add to a broadcast in the first place? I get it. It's baseball. There are dead periods of a broadcast, but dude awkwardly talking to women isn't in any way interesting.

I'd like to slag sideline reporting in general, but then I think of the ones who do it right and who do add to the broadcast. Brewers sideline reporter Sophia Minnaert is a gem. Gives really good info, doesn't do stupid ****, and she speaks Spanish, so postgame interviews she does with Spanish-speaking players are self-interpreted.

What can I say, I watched it ... and right off the bat, he gets the first woman's name wrong. Not exactly the finest moment in broadcasting.

The women, as usual, are right. People would have lost their **** if a female sideline reporter did that with a rando dude. Also, to follow up on Bubbler's point, the number of sideline reporters regardless of gender who add something to the broadcast can be counted on one hand (and I can't think of one in baseball now that former SNYer Kevin Burkhardt is at Fox).

What bothers me, and this is just one example of it, is how people don't give a **** about professional standards in any profession it seems.

Reaction to something like this is always brainless **** like, "what's the big deal?" Or, "he's just having fun!" Or, "people have to find a way to get mad about everything!"

Every job has standards. Just because the public doesn't understand those standards doesn't mean they don't exist.

There's **** you're not supposed to do, but because we have spent at least four generations slagging anything that represents an established standard we tear everything that puts a brake on our bull**** apart. Well, yeah, when you spend 75 years saying **** like that, it produces people who make it a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Thankfully it’s amazing she hasn’t been scooped up by the national networks … like they even give a rip about baseball anyway, let alone dugout reporters.

Her work is always solid, has a personality, then you add in her Spanish speaking skills on top of that … Their top star Jackson Chourio doesn’t speak fluent English, but we get immediate postgame reaction from him.

Brewers fans are lucky to have her on the broadcasts.

The Warriors were also fortunate to have Ros Gold-Owunde (sp) on telecasts early in their run. Not just eye candy, but she knew the game. She played for Tara VanDerveer at Stanford.

Both the Dubs and Giants have gotten away from sideline reporters post Covid. Not missing them.

What utter garbage. Another ugly case of something a guy doing that's considered cool - and when a female does it, there's something wrong with her.

Whoever suggested this to the talking heads needs to be disciplined. If the talking heads did this unprompted, then just get rid of them now.
