A-Rod said Boras gave him the impression the Yankees weren't interested in bringing him back, which surprised him.

"Our goals were not aligned," Rodriguez said. "It felt funny to me."

He said he and Boras agreed the slugger would opt out of his deal, but Rodriguez thought the move would be revealed after the World Series.

"I made mistakes. I've got to look in the mirror. If I had to do it again, I would've called Hank from Day 1 and negotiated myself," Rodriguez said

Agreed. That's the reason why the Yankees announced it today and had A-Rod do the conference call, with the ground-rule to reporters being no questions on steriods/HGH/etc.

What the Yankees weren't interested in was Boras and the ridiculous price tag he miscalculated, which ARod and Boras quickly realized no one was going to pay anything close to -- especially without the Yankees in the mix so Boras could credibly lie to other teams about their interest to drive up the bidding.

i also agree that the yanks took a big one for selig today, holding the official signing/phone presser to at least attempt to get the n.y. back pages away from mitchell/pettitte/clemens and onto the good news for their pinstripes. ol' george would be mighty proud of hank, if he still had any idea what was going on.

Can anybody point me to a chart that breaks down that previous deal? I'm having trouble making that add up, compared to reporting at the time of his signing when still with the Rangers.

How stupid and fradulent would have those reporters felt had Rodriguez's name been all over the report?

Not sure that's a conference call I'd want to be in on, considering the groundrules.

I think A-Rod's problem is that he tries to please everybody.

I may be one of the rare people who doesn't blame Scott Boras for the evils of baseball and the world. I don't think A-Rod could lay the blame on his agent - he knew about the money as far as the portion that Texas was paying, and if he wanted to sign with the Yankees that was a big factor. For crying out loud, everybody in New York knew that.

I would seek Warren Buffett for advice over Scott Boras, but Scott Boras has done well for a lot of players. This may have been the one time when he overestimated the market, but A-Rod wasn't forced into any decisions by Boras.

Boras wanted $20M for Jones. He got $18M (granted, only two years.)

I wouldn't call that settling.

I know Andruw got $18M+ for a couple of years ... Dodgers placated egos by making sure his annual haul was a little more than Torii Hunter's.

But Boras was thinking a Carlos Beltran-level deal for an outfielder who's out of shape and had a sub-par year. He wanted a nine-figure deal for Andruw - and fell far short.
