Description:

The Associated Press seeks a Regional Assistant Sports Editor to
supervise sports coverage in the Northern United States.

The editor will be based in a Northern location to be determined and
will supervise approximately 15 writers. This editor reports to the
deputy sports editor. This editor assigns, directs, edits and
coordinates stories with writers within the region on a daily basis for
stories and coverage related to all sports. Other responsibilities
include working with Multimedia, Photos, Graphics and Broadcast on a
daily basis.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated news and editing skills, the
ability to handle fast-breaking stories as well as features and
enterprise experience. Applicants should have knowledge of and an
interest in a full range of sports, nationally and internationally.
Applicants should be able to work with writers, identify and assign
stories, and develop projects with bureaus. Candidates must be
organized, energetic, highly motivated and able to communicate ideas
clearly.

Applicants must be able to work well with reporters to produce a
top-notch report across all platforms. Candidates must be capable of
supervising and directing special events on site or from the office.
Must be familiar with and able to work with multimedia elements, and
must have ability and desire to work with Graphics, Broadcast, Photos
and Online Video to ensure proper packaging of stories. Applicants
should have three to five years of full-time daily sports and management
experience.

I would think Chicago and Detroit would be for the Midwest ASE. It's a little hard to break the country into just four locations. Since there is no "East" posting, North might be for New England / North East.

My AP sources tell me no progress whatsoever and they wouldn't be surprised if there isn't any for a long time. Seems to be a lack of interest.

I've got a buddy who sent in his resume for one of these positions and he's got a strong resume, very well suited to the posted job description, trust me.

He heard nothing for about six to eight weeks, then all of a sudden he gets a form email telling him that the resume he submitted has been reviewed and shows him to be a good match for some regional news editor position they have open, encouraging him to apply.

And he basically has zilch experience when it comes to news side. Go figure.

Somehow I'm skeptical of the notion they got <b>400</b> applications! ... But I could be wrong. According to my AP sports sources, last time they had an ASE opening in NY, there was a lack of mutual interest (i.e. AP wasn't interested in most of those who applied, and those who were 'encouraged to apply' weren't interested in the job). The job was open nearly a year before it was filled
Same appears to be the case this year. ... Also, i'm told internally they've told people that these positions won't be filled until after the Olympics. So, if you really want this job, sit tight.
