It's off the AP jobs board site, but in the past, AP has put out announcements on hires such as this one, but I haven't seen one.

They've had several hiring freezes in the last two years (and shed about 400 jobs last year) as they're trying to bring payroll costs down. That it's been posted again means that they have clearance to finally fill the job, but there's no guarantee that they'll hire externally. AP has made a few external hires as of late, so that's encouraging.

This is a golden job, but very tough. You don't have enough sportswriters to cover your 10 states, huge pressure to turn out enterprise ahead of those east coast giant metros and you've got to have enough stringer help to cover gamers at the pro and college level (but not D-II or D-III.) Expectations are very, high, the pressure is great. Working for someone like Mary Byrne is a huge plus, but some days you'll go home and need a few drinks to clear your head.

Tim Sullivan, formerly of the NY Post, took this position a few weeks ago if I'm not mistaken.
