This one just punched me the gut and filled the room with dust.

A mom.

Awesome that we like a photo enough to suggest it's the best of the year, but don't feel a need to credit the photographer. "Well done, whoever you are."

Abby Bennethum, mother of Paige, wife of Brett.

Touching moment, but not picture of the year.

Too many compositional problems.

When you've got a duck in a barrel, you'd best shoot it well.

Oh I'm sure it would not hold up when all the factors are considered, but that mother nailed the moment.

Well, now the Thread title reads "Amatuer picture of the year" so, I probably shouldn't be such a hard ass.

Glad I could help.

Had a guy on staff who spelled it amatuer every single time. For years. No matter how many reminders.

This thread is filled with fail. Except for the picture. Damn good picture.

Like what?

I love the picture.

From a purely compositional standpoint, the little girl's feet are cut off, as are those of several of the soldiers, including her father; there's no sense of place (they appear to be standing in an alley behind at least two buildings, which I'm guessing they're not); there's something in the left front of the picture; and I have no idea what they're doing other than standing in a line.

What's in the photo is good. The actual photo, to put it bluntly, is not.

Composition-wise, it's not perfect. But it does create/stir emotions which I prefer to composition anyway. It's a great photo in that aspect.

Sorry.

I like the picture. It is good. :)

I didn't realize she was holding her dad's hand until I read the story. When I did, it made me teary.
