TV broadcaster Len Kasper said so today on the radio, and the subsequent hosts were having a field day with it the rest of the afternoon.

Seems ridiculous to me, though someone pointed out:

* Success as a starter and a closer.
* Coming back from multiple arm surgeries.
* Second-highest SO/9 in baseball history.
* The whole "New Mr. Cub" factor, i.e. coming back to the franchise, etc., etc.

Still seems ridiculous to me. Maybe the Indians care retire Joe Charboneau next.

Teases, heartbreak, unfulfilled promise ... no one more personifies a franchise.

Sure, why not?

Re: Should the Cubs retire Kerry Wood's number?

I'm sorry, but I was sure doodah had started this thread.

You cannot be serious!

In my defense, this is in reaction to something someone else, someone in an official capacity with the ballclub, said. This is not me starting some random thread.

No. It kinda is.

Doesn't he need to retire first?

Jose Cardenal is wondering what he's got to do to get a little ****ing respect around here.

What about guys who went on to do great things in sports after their Cubs days?

It didn't feel that odd when they were talking about it all afternoon on the radio.

Not until the Cardinals retire his number.

Re: Should the Cubs retire Kerry Wood's number?

He could have at least kept with the theme and made the thread title "Something Happened on the Way to Heaven."

It's random. You started it.

Sure, I can see it now--Wood's number affixed to the scoreboard right next to emblems of Leon Durham's glove, Bartman's headphones, and Cindy Sandberg's sundress.

Not everything in life can be as orderly as the Dewey (Evans) Decimal System.

Pitched what was probably the greatest game in history - by far the greatest of my conscious lifetime.
