Adios to the 747

Lufthansa uses a 747 on its Orlando/FRA route. First time I flew on one my wife and I were upstairs in Row 1; very cool.

I remember the first time I saw one parked at a gate as I was walking by. I went over to the window, took a long look and jokingly said to the person I was with, “There’s no way something this big can get on the air, and if it does, it can’t stay there.”

I was just outside and noticed a large four-engine jet flying overhead. I have an app on my phone that tracks planes. Sure enough, it was a 747-400 operated by Challenge Airlines (never heard of them) flying from Liege to Atlanta.

That last 747 off the production line did a nice little tribute on its maiden flight from Washington to Cincinnati.

This, indeed, is awesome. Seeing something like that is just happy and fun. Wonder from a practical standpoint how much time that took and how much fuel cost. Worth every penny, regardless.

Story said it took about 2 1/2 hours. The fuel cost could probably be justified as part of the expense of a shakedown flight.

When the wind is from the south, planes on approach to Love Field pass over my house. They're low enough that I can see the markings (most of them are Southwest).
