Portland Press Herald has sliced 31 jobs, 25 through buyouts and six through layoffs...no names yet, but this does hit the newsroom..Paper is also closing its four satellite bureaus...Augusta, Biddeford, Bath, and Washington....parent company Blethen (Seattle Times) has been trying to sell the PPH and its other properties in the state...this is the third round of layoffs...

Why (other than suits grubbing money) would Portland close its bureau in Augusta.... Wouldn't that be, you know, important

And no, grifter. It's the end of the quarter

This is getting too close to home for me. Not fun being a newbie in this business.
****, you're golden as long as you aren't in a union shop. You come cheap.

despite this news, I'm still counting today as a rare 24 hours without another layoff announcement.

Still two hours and 38 minutes to go.

Damn you BYH! You jinxed it. Just read the Portland thread.

Sorry man, but there's absolutely no way any of us should be saying "phew, bad news over, at least for today."

It just keeps coming and coming and coming. It's mind-blowing.

And Portland's supposed to be one of The Good Ones. Jesus Christ.

bit of an update....no losses in sports...about 8-10 in the newsroom, mostly via the buyout...including veteran night editor David McNab, who had two tours as the SE there

Not sure if this is the most recent Portland thread....but reallt sad to see Rachel Lenzi go. She modernized UMaine sports coverage on Twitter and with the blog and was really spot on 99.5 percent of the time. :(

I read or heard or saw a number in the range of 60-something? Can that be right? How big is the place anyway? Wow.

Knew someone looking into the recent ME opening there. Considering the environment, I'm glad he didn't get it.

That sucks that Rachel is gone. About as good a hockey reporter and as good a person as you'd want to know.

Always had pleasant interactions with Rachel. Hope she lands on her feet.

My best to Rachel. Haven't talked to her in far too long, obviously, as I found out about this on here. Terrible news.
