Henrico County employees, including school staff, have reportedly been asked to conserve electricity after the Virginia county, home to multiple data centers, said its power costs for government and school facilities would rise by nearly 25 percent starting July 1, adding an estimated $5 million in the next fiscal year.

Henrico has become a data center hub in recent years. 404 Media reported that the county has 37 data centers and plans for 17 more, while the Henrico Citizen reported that Henrico’s eastern corridor is now home to at least 16 facilities, with more on the way. County officials have attributed at least part of the rate increase to rising fuel costs, but have not connected it to data centers, according to the Henrico Citizen.

The energy issue data centers are being hammered with is going to be resolved due to ongoing efficiencies being deployed. Pretty much every aspect of the AI process is rapidly being streamlined and optimized, which will result near-term in a lessened demand per GPU for electricity and water (which, BTW is circulated, not pumped-and-dumped a la fracking) and long-term in greatly improved energy extraction and alternative energy options (like safe nuclear). Besides, some experts believe the largest data centers will be in orbit in 20 years.

But rest assured, it ain't Betamax. It ain't Atari. AI is coming for your job and it will have it in the next 5-10 years max, just like electricity came for steam 125 years ago.

The big step, to me, occurs when AI is able to fix problems or adjust to situations beyond the precedents and data that it has been fed. (Maybe we're already at this point?).

We've been using machines to spot problems as they occur in production for many years now. But equipment that can analyze and solve those problems? That's always been where human creativity and thinking stepped in.

****ing none. The investments in VR goggles, tHe mEtAvErSe, perv glasses, and AI are staggering and one by one they've all gone bust (AI on its way). Complete corporate malpractice but the only ones who have paid for it are the tens of thousands of employees the company has let go in the last five years. Corporate boards are a farce anyway, but Meta is structured such that the only way Zuck can get juiced is if it's his call

This got me curious, but I'm pretty sure I'll end up disappointed. Read the book ages ago, and it was fun.

Whomever is behind it is trying to mix in some of the recent canon stuff (mainly from the Clone Wars series and Rebels) in with what Timothy Zahn created, and the first chapter did not move with the same energy as Zahn's book. Also, whomever was used as the model for Princess Leia isn't quite Carrie Fisher, and it shows.
