So Conference finals this weekend, who you got?

The fanboi in me wants to believe the Eskimos will beat the Lions, but I'm not holding my breath. The Lions have historical knack for getting to the Grey Cup when they host it, and losing Messam is a big blow to their offence although Hugh Charles is not a huge drop off. Still I gotta go with the Lions in this one as much as it pains me.

In the East it should be Winnipeg. I have no confidence that the Hamilton QBs can put together back-to-back solid games. Blue Bombers in a walk.

Lions over Bombers in the Grey Cup as long as they can keep Lulay upright.

Gotta admit I was not completely sold on Lulay at the beginning of the season but he has come a long way this year and he looks legit.

So, Acadia goes up 14-0 early in the first Q on Friday night and that's it. McMaster scores 38 unanswered points and ends up winning 45-21. And of course, Laval put the boots to U of Calgary.

So if the Cats beat the Bombers tonight, it's an all Hamilton Canadian football championship

Go Cats, go Marauders.

Any Canucks here know if one city has won both championships in the same year?

These are the closest I can find. I am sure JJ can come up with some obscure university football championship the predated the Vanier by 75 years.

Eskimos won the Grey Cup in 1980, same year the Alberta Golden Bears won the Vanier. Calgary Dinos won in 1995, Stamps lost the Grey Cup to Baltimore.

Nope. I'm stumped as to whether there was anything prior to 1965 on a par with the Vanier Cup.

Of course, way back when JR was in school, university teams were still eligible for the Grey Cup. I think JR was actually on a McMaster team that got knocked out in the semifinals by the Varsity Blues in 1920. ;D

So, the 99th Grey Cup is tomorrow night in Vancouver. BC vs Winnipeg andthe craziness has already started.

Two players from the 1963 Grey Cup, Ticats Angelo Mosca and BC Lions QB Joe Kapp start a fight at a special luncheon. A real fight. Canes and fisticuffs. :)

Two 73 year olds dredging up the incident that every Ticat fan over a certain age remembers fondly: Mosca's late hit on BC running back Willie Fleming which knocked him out of the game.

Kapp brought a flower with him on to the stage as a "peace offering" and began to wave it in Mosca's face. Words were exchanged. Then Kapp shoved Mosca, who was sitting on a stool, nearly knocking the former Tiger-Cat great to the floor.

As he regained his balance, Mosca reared back and clubbed Kapp across the side of the head with his cane and onlookers began to understand that even though Mosca was a long-time pro wrestler, this altercation was neither staged nor fake.

After being struck, Kapp then hauled back and punched Mosca in the face,.....................

I interviewed Mosca back in 1997, biggest hands of anyone I have ever met. Sure wouldn't have waved a flower in his face or taken a swing at him then.

Back when I used to cover the CFL, I was at a Hamilton game, sitting in the press box. Four seats down, someone was cheering loudly for the Tiger-Cats. I got up, preparing to say something about it.

Then I saw it was Mosca.

I went back to my seat.

Growing up in Burlington, I used to go to Cats games all the time. Back in the day when Hamilton truly was Steeltown, Mosca was the epitome of the lunchbucket mentality

To this day, even though I've lived in Toronto for over 30 years, I can't stand the Argos. It's bred in the bone.

When I interviewed Mosca he clearly reveled in his notoriety and he said he was still one of the most recognizable figures in Canadian sports. He was still pretty bitter about never being considered to be CFL commissioner which stemmed, he believed, partly from the controversy around the Fleming hit and his attempts to get a CFL players' association started way back in the day.

It was funny to listen to him talk abut why he chose the Ti-Cats over the Philadelphia Eagles, who also drafted him. He said Hamilton offered just as much money and a teaching job in the offseason. Unthinkable now.

As a die-hard Argo fan my old man hated Mosca, but whenever he wrestled at Maple Leaf Gardens the old man would be on his side. We'd see some interview with Mosca on the Saturday afternoon rasslin' show on CHCH and the old man would say, "The ****ing Sheik doesn't know what he's in for tomorrow night at the Gardens against Big Ang!"

The Grey Cup is the biggest annual sporting event in Canada. Nobody cares about the commercials, only that there are far too many and I don't think advertisers go crazy trying to out do each other. From what I saw on the tvs in the press box, it looked like the same christmas ads that had been on tv for the last month or so anyways.

Grey Cup isn't that big a deal in Toronto (which is one of biggest challenges facing the CFL). I can't remember the last Grey Cup party I was at. The take-out pizza and wing joints don't take out big ads in the paper and I suspect if you ventured into a number of bars downtown on Sunday they'd be showing whatever NFL games were on. The only new ad I saw (many times) was TSN flogging its upcoming coverage of the World Juniors.

Even if the Argos somehow miraculously get to the Grey Cup next year at home I would think there might be a spike in interest but that would end the next day.
