KISS and Genesis get long overdue nominations. It's about damn time. No, it's way past time.

I believe I heard a shout from Carolina all the way here to Atlanta.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090923/ap_en_mu/us_music_rock_hall

Now the question is can both get in? My guess is the Peppers and LL Cool J are in, leaving 3 spots.

KISS is in now for sure, I think. Genesis was much bigger in the rest of the world than they were in the US (same goes for many other British groups like Supertramp) but I think they sneak in. I don't know enough about LL Cool J to say he belongs or not. I think the Hollies (terrific singles band - if Dave Clark is in they should be too) and ABBA sneak in under the wire.

Surprised Donna Summer didn't get in on the first ballot. Along with the Bee Gees, she was the biggest name in a particular genre of music.

I figure it's KISS, Genesis, LL Cool J, ABBA and between The Hollies and Donna Summer for the final spot.

Chili Peppers have to wait til next year.

Donna Summer is an interesting case. Megapopular for some time in the late 70s. pretty much off the map since then. I'd put the Chilis in.

Donna Summer was nowhere on the par with the BeeGees, not during the disco era, and certainly not from a career perspective. In my view, she's closer to a one hit wonder than Hall of Fame inductee.

Rolling Stone has always had a hard on for the Chili Peppers. I think that will play out in their favor.

I'll go with KISS, Genesis, LL Cool J, Peppers and ABBA.

Sirs, Madames,

No Zevon. What, did he bet on concerts or something?

You can't hold his association with bad characters againsty him (Albom).

o-<

Damn. I was there this summer, and I did not notice Zevon's omission.

Does KISS get into the Hall of Rap?

Either kick the rap groups out or rename the place.

Sirs, Madames,

Artists/bands I'd take ahead of anybody on this year's list and last year's.

Zevon, Little Feat, Love, The Jam, Television, Kris Kristofferson, Nilsson.

Marley is in ... but not the Wailers.* One reggae performer. Cliff might get in but I'd have Burning Spear or Black Uruhu or Toots ahead of him.

Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade for world music. Os Mutantes too.

*You can make a case that the Wailers should be in way ahead of the Attractions.

From Wikipedia:

Summer is one of the most successful recording artists of the 1970s and was the first artist to have three consecutive double albums hit #1 on the Billboard charts. She also became the first female artist to have four number-one singles in a thirteen-month period. Summer's website claims that she has sold more than 130 million records worldwide.

She was much, much more than a one-hit wonder. Not my favorite artist, but she was absolutely huge during the 70s.

Thanks for looking that up, Phil. Also, Summer proved she was more than just a disco diva when she had a HUGE hit with "She Works Hard for the Money" in 1983.

As for rap/hip-hop artists in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, that genie is long since out of the bottle. The Hall isn't truly about just rock n' roll, but includes all American popular music since Bill Haley/Chuck Berry.

Definitely agree on Jam, Little Feat and Zevon. I'll throw in another Mr. Friend O' fave, Roxy Music, as well.

And no Ian Hunter/Mott...

Just Another Night, indeed.

Fair enough. And I didn't mean to imply she was a one hit wonder--just that her body of work doesn't measure up with what I would consider to be HOF credentials. She was big for about a 3 year period of 76-79(Hard for the Money notwithstanding, she really didn't register much during the 80s).

Mr H et al,

I can't see how Traffic gets in ahead of Mott or Love.

I can't see how Blondie gets in ahead of The Jam or Television.

i can't see how Brenda Lee is in ahead of Patsy Cline.

I can't see how Leonard Cohen doesn't need a ticket to get into the HOF. Canned Heat, Country Joe, Ten Years After, Grand Funk Railroad, The Shaggs, Black Oak Arkansas, Uriah Heep ... anybody else but not Cohen, thanks. Any Canadian knows The Guess Who should be rushed in.

Should Spinal Tap be recognized?

What's the music equivalent of SABR?

BTW ... Mott the Hoople comeback concerts are nearing. A big deal. Evidently Buffin is pretty sick and will only be able to get behind the kit for a few songs. Pity they won't tour.

Mott The Hoople is so criminally underrated its ridiculous. That said, I kind of fear those reunion concerts. Ian Hunter is 70 for crissakes.
